Chutney Mary continues to prove
a great success with the critics (as well as customers!). Here are just
some of their comments.
The Square Meal Guide,
in ranking Chutney Mary as London's best modern Indian restaurant for
the second consecutive year, said:
“There’s no changing our conviction that this long established
favourite which so successfully re-launched two years ago is still the best
indian restaurant in town. A beacon of consistency, its’ service, wines
and food are always excellent” ……
They called the wine list “stunningly creative”, and said “Margins
are sensible and helpful notes guide you through what could otherwise be a
food and wine – matching nightmare”
The Harden Guide in making
it London’s Best Indian Restaurant:
“… with an elegant modern refit a couple of years ago, this distant-Chelsea
Indian has gone from strength to strength; wonderful contemporary cuisine,
and helpful, knowledgeable staff make it the best all-round upmarket
sub- continental in town”
Fay Maschler - Evening Standard:
“Not so much Bollywood as jolly, jolly good.”
“Spices
are roasted and stocks are made on a daily basis, a detail … that makes
comparison with sophisticated western food a real possibility.”
“Desserts are another revelation”
“A look that is shimmering and seductive”
“The staff charming and anxious to please”
The
Tatler Restaurant Guide, in describing it as one of the jewels in the
crown, and one of the best rooms in London said:
“This is one of London's most stylish and glamorous Indian restaurants”
The Zagat Guide:
“Still evolving after all these years, the refurbished (Chutney)
Mary is the king of Kings Road, boasting inviting décor,
accommodating service, and sublime Indian cooking with a different
zest that reveals some flavours that exist nowhere in the West”
R
W Apple Jr - New York Times: “Its menu... delivers
flavours of remarkable complexity and intensity, drawn from cities
across India, from Delhi to Lucknow, Cochin
and Amritsar. The star turn of a recent lunch in the plant-filled
conservatory was a Goan curry - chunks
of succulent chicken breast in a sauce the colour of pesto, made with
green chillies and coriander.”
Roopa Gulati of Time Out,
the leading London events magazine:
“Dishes taste fab,
and are classically Indian in flavour, so no-one can knock the pretty
presentation just because it's done differently back home.”
“Meaty crab claws with cracked peppercorns and warm garlicky butter looks
set
to become a signature dish.”
“Preserved ginger over a creamy bread and butter pudding topped with a
fresh orange and green cardamom spice sorbet rounded off a meal that was worth
leaving the
subcontinent for.”
“Service is also spot-on, as smooth as Indian silk.”
Paul Levy - Wall Street Journal:
“I swooned over the Nahari lamb soup, with its morsels of marrow,
rich broth, and a pastry dome... Vegetable dishes and breads are worth
making room for... The wine list is sensational, not over-priced,
and provides proof that Indian food can harmonize with wine.”
“Now the place is decorated like the sophisticated palace of a
thoroughly modern maharajah - lots of bold colours and glass.”
