Food

The background to the diversity of Indian cuisine is set out in the Creators.

The Chutney Mary menu cleverly combines classic Indian recipes with the food trends in contemporary India, presenting refined Indian cooking at its best.

  • We have timeless heritage dishes
  • There is an emphasis on seafood such as Chutney Mary's own take on the more modern crab dishes that are all the rage in Bombay seafood restaurants
  • The menu reflects the kebab craze sweeping the subcontinent
  • A wide selection of fabulous Indian breads
  • Delectable innovative desserts, unusual for Indian restaurants, provide a fitting end to the evening.

We are unable to detail full menus because of our changing selection. By way of guidance:

  • Starters range from a heart-warming soup, and delicately spiced seafood, to a beautifully presented chaat, and robust kebabs. They are priced between £6.25 and £9.50 (more for lobster!)
  • Main courses cover the gamut of cooking techniques, and produce including game. Our range of seafood, poultry (corn-fed chicken), and lamb (sourced from Devon) are supplied by some of London’s finest. Main course prices range from £15.50 to £22.00.
  • Vegetarians have a choice of two platters – one is a traditional North Indian platter of vegetables and daal. The other comprises unusual vegetarian dishes such as stir-fried banana flower with coconut, baby courgette masala, okra and water chestnut in a selection of 7 items
  • Desserts are priced at about £5.75

Food presentation plays an important role as Chutney Mary demonstrates the importance of colour in Indian food with natural yellows, greens, reds and whites banishing the brown sludge seen in the many restaurants serving imitations of Indian food. Every dish is plated with style in the kitchen by chefs, on quality white and handmade glass plates chosen for their shape and utility.

Chutney Mary's new menu and the quality of the creations has been much praised (See Critics Comments for details)

Wine

Chutney Mary is famous for pioneering the selection of wines to accompany Indian food and destroying the stereotype that beer is the only appropriate alcohol with spicy food.

Our wine list has been carefully compiled with the assistance of Matthew Jukes, the best selling wine writer and award winning wine buyer, to complement and enhance the flavours of Indian food. It features a globe-trotting, eclectic and unique selection of over 100 wines.

This offers exceptional value for money, with relatively low mark ups on the more expensive wines - to encourage experimentation.

The list is divided by style of wine rather than by country, with each wine having its own zingy and informative tasting note.

Andrew Jefford, Evening Standard, reviewed the wine list and awarded it 4 out of 5. He said “This is a fine list, packed with interesting and unusual choices. There were two dozen wines I'd willingly have tried. It's probably as good as any list can be at having a grab at the sub-continental challenge.”

The seriousness with which we take our wine list is demonstrated by the glassed-in, temperature controlled wine room in the restaurant where customers can see the ideal conditions in which their wine has been kept.
